8th ANIE Annual Conference 2017

The 8th ANIE Meeting is organized by ANIE in collaboration with the University of tourism, Technology and Business Studies and it is scheduled to take place on 4th-6th October 2017 at Kigali Rwanda.

Theme: Higher Education in Africa: New Regional and Global Dynamics

Background and Rationale

In recent years, higher education in Africa has undergone several transformations including the rapid expansion of the sector   mainly with regard to increase in enrolments and diversity of providers, new developments and reforms in areas such as quality, leadership and governance, research productivity, growth in new modes of learning and social engagement and responsiveness to societal demands. Recent global developments and the emerging discourse of deglobalization in several parts of the world could also herald new realities for higher education in Africa. In addition to these, there have also been regional developments within Africa with implications for the future of higher education and its international dimension in Africa. These include continental programmes to support higher education in Africa especially based on the African Union’s Agenda 2063, regional frameworks for research, quality assurance and production of more PhDs. There has also been an increase in the number of regional networks for research and capacity building within and between African universities. These developments present unprecedented opportunities and challenges to African universities. The 8th ANIE conference will discuss the impacts that these global and regional developments are having of Africa’s higher education. It will analyze, discuss and critique how African universities perceive these developments and their preparedness to respond to them and also benefit from the opportunities and remain relevant in the 21st Century.
